Altrincham's switch-on has not been announced for 2026. Last year's Neon Noel ran on Saturday 22 November, and the date usually lands in late October.

Altrincham’s Christmas lights switch-on has not been announced for 2026. As of today there is no date, no headliner and no start time anywhere on the organiser’s own channels. That is normal for early September, and this page will carry the date the moment it appears.

What follows is what is verifiable now: who runs it, when it has landed in past years, when the announcement usually comes, and the shape of the day so you can plan around it before the poster exists.

The 2026 position, checked today

Altrincham’s Christmas events are run by Altrincham BID, the business improvement district that also publishes Visit Altrincham. It is not a council event, which is why nothing about it ever appears on Trafford Council’s website.

  • The BID’s own events calendar has nothing. Filtered across October 2026 to mid January 2027 it returns no switch-on, no lantern parade, no Christmas market and no festive event of any kind. The calendar is populated for that period with pub quizzes, craft classes and cinema screenings, so it is being maintained; the Christmas programme simply is not in it yet.
  • The BID’s news feed has nothing either. Its most recent posts cover a morris dancing day, job listings and a cinema weekend. There is no 2026 Christmas item.

Neither of those means the event is off. It means it has not been published, which at the start of September is exactly where it sat last year.

When it has run, and when it was announced

It is always a Saturday, and always the second half of November. In 2025 the announcement came exactly a month and a day before the event. If that holds, the 2026 date should be public in the second half of October.

What the day actually looks like

The 2025 event, branded Neon Noel, ran 2.45pm to 6pm and was free. It took over Regent Road and George Street in the town centre, with the main stage on Regent Road and viewing all along George Street. The whole thing was hosted by Happy Radio.

The bill was built from local performers with one or two names on top. In 2025 those were Sam Aston, the Coronation Street actor who won that year’s Dancing on Ice, and Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha, who pressed the button together. Around them were Luzahnn of Livin’ Joy, the Little Belters, The Music Place Choir, Altrincham Garrick Show Choir, Sale and Altrincham Musical Theatre, Cardwell Theatre School and the Randalls Band, plus Santa. Face painting was £3, cash only.

In 2023 the same event ran from 3pm with the lights going on at 6pm, so a mid afternoon start and an early evening switch is the pattern rather than a one off.

It is getting busier, measurably. The BID reported footfall up 36.7% on the equivalent weekend the year before after the 2025 event. If you are bringing small children and want to see the stage rather than the back of a coat, arriving at the advertised start rather than for the switch-on is the practical answer.

The other date to hold: the Lantern Parade

Altrincham runs a second, separate Christmas event in December, and people regularly confuse the two. The Lantern Parade and Nativity Journey is a whole afternoon rather than a stage show, run with St George’s Church and the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse.

In 2025 it fell on Saturday 13 December, and in 2023 on Saturday 9 December, so a Saturday in the second week of December is the pattern. The 2025 running order gives you the shape:

  • From 12 noon: Nativity trail cards collected at Stamford Square, WA14 1SG, then a stamp trail around the town with characters posted at Bounceback Food Community Kitchen, Altrincham Interchange, The Cheshire Tap, Nell’s Pizza and OYEZ Arts, and a treat back at Stamford Square for a full card.
  • From 12 noon: stage performances in Stamford Square, school and community choirs back to back.
  • 12pm to 1pm and 2pm to 3pm: lantern making workshops at OYEZ Arts in the Town Hall, booked in advance.
  • 4pm: the parade gathers at Goose Green.
  • 4.45pm: the parade sets off, along Denmark Street, Moss Lane, Stamford New Road, Regent Road, Market Street and Shaw’s Road, finishing in the Stamford Quarter.

That route is the thing to note if you are driving into town on parade afternoon. It crosses most of the central shopping streets.

Parking and getting in

Both events are in the pedestrianised core, so the practical question is where to leave the car. Our Altrincham parking page has the tariffs, the free periods and the closing times for each car park.

Watch for a parking offer with the announcement. In 2023 the Stamford Quarter car park charged 50p all day on both the switch-on and the parade day. Nothing similar has been confirmed for 2026, and it is worth checking when the date lands rather than assuming.
