Stamford Square hosts a street party this Saturday, 29 August, from 12pm to 6pm. Stamford Quarter’s listing for it mentions no ticket and no booking. Food and drink come from traders in the square, so bring money for those.

Stamford Quarter has published the line-up. Here is what is actually happening, and how to get there on a bank holiday weekend.

What is on in the square

Between 12pm and 4pm, for children:

  • a crafts table run by Sostrene Grene, making bracelets
  • giant wooden garden games in the square
  • colouring outside the Boots store, with the Boots team on hand for health advice

Through the afternoon, for everyone:

  • DJ sets from Nite School at The Kiosk
  • live musicians playing between the DJ sets
  • cocktails and cold drinks from Cocktails Cartel Manchester

The centre says there is plenty of seating in the square, and that food can be taken out from the traders around it (Stamford Quarter: summer street party).

What there is to eat

Three pop-up offers are named:

  • chocolate mousse from Grue, a French patisserie in the town
  • Greek street food from Street Ltd
  • gelato and slushies from Nell’s Pizza

Alongside those, the centre lists takeaway from Yum Cha, Nell’s Pizza, Domino’s, Little Dessert Shop, Costa, Starbucks and Greggs.

Getting there, and the weekend around it

The tram is the easy answer. There are no planned works on the Altrincham Metrolink line this weekend, and Stamford Quarter sits directly opposite Altrincham Interchange.

If you drive, this is a good weekend for it. National Highways lists no closure at all on the M60, M56, M62 or M66 on any of the four nights from Friday to Monday. Its own count falls from 193 closures across the network on Thursday night to 13 on Sunday (National Highways road closure report).

In the town itself, Craven Road and Barlow Road stay shut for gas works until 31 August, and there are urgent water works on Ashley Road and The Downs. Our Altrincham roadworks and travel page has the permit references and dates, and our parking guide has the town centre tariffs.

Sunday is the day to avoid the A56. Manchester United play Ipswich Town at Old Trafford at 4.30pm, and Manchester Pride runs in the city centre from Friday to Monday, with three nights of concerts at Wythenshawe Park alongside (TfGM events).

Stamford Quarter’s own opening hours are 9am to 6pm on the Saturday and 11am to 5pm on the Sunday. For the bank holiday Monday the centre says to check individual stores.

What it means for you: if you want the children’s activities, get there between 12pm and 4pm, because the crafts and the Boots colouring both stop at 4pm. The music runs later. Come by tram if you can, both because the square is opposite the Interchange and because Sunday’s football will make the A56 the worst road in the borough for the rest of the weekend.
