No trains run on Christmas Day, and the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. Last year's Altrincham tram, train and bus times over Christmas.

There will be no trains from Altrincham on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, and most operators will run nothing on Saturday 26 December either. This year the Boxing Day bank holiday falls on Monday 28 December, a substitute day, and nobody has said yet what runs on it.

The quick answer

  • No National Rail trains on Christmas Day. Northern, which runs Altrincham’s trains, has confirmed it.
  • Trains finish early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve on many routes. The last-train guides come out in late November and early December.
  • Last New Year’s Eve, trams ran from Altrincham until about 1am, but St Peter’s Square closed at 9pm for the fireworks.

Checked on 25 September 2026 against National Rail, Northern and Transport for Greater Manchester.

Trains: what is already confirmed for 2026

National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 travel summary covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027:

Date What National Rail says
Thursday 24 December Trains on many routes finish earlier than normal
Friday 25 December No National Rail services
Saturday 26 December Most operators run no service; a very limited service from a few, details to follow
Monday 28 December The Boxing Day bank holiday, on a substitute day; services to be confirmed
Thursday 31 December Trains on some routes finish earlier than normal

It says operators’ own details will be added “from the beginning of October onwards”, and that engineering work will affect routes across the period.

Northern’s Christmas page on National Rail so far fills in one day: no trains will operate on Christmas Day. Every other day from 24 December to 4 January reads “Information will be published when available.” Northern’s own Christmas travel tips say its trains run until about 9pm on Christmas Eve and not at all on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Altrincham’s trains are Northern’s hourly service to Manchester Piccadilly, 28 minutes from the Interchange. More on that route is on our tram and train times page.

Trams and buses: last year’s pattern

TfGM has not published 2026 festive times. Its Christmas timetables page for 2025, now offline but kept by the Internet Archive, gave these for the new year:

Trams, New Year’s Eve 2025:

  • Every 12 minutes, 6am to 9pm, on the Altrincham to Etihad Campus line.
  • At 9pm St Peter’s Square stop closed for Manchester’s New Year’s Eve firework display.
  • From 9pm to the end of service, trams ran every 12 minutes from Altrincham to Deansgate-Castlefield only.
  • Last trams left the city centre at around 1am.

Trams, New Year’s Day 2026: every 15 minutes, 7am to midnight, Altrincham to Etihad Campus.

Trains, as TfGM summarised them last year: most stopped or ran reduced from 7pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; none on Christmas Day or Boxing Day; normal from 2 January.

Buses, New Year’s Eve 2025: Bee Network routes ran a Saturday timetable, with night buses on some routes. Other operators generally ran a Saturday or modified Saturday timetable and stopped from 6pm.

Buses, New Year’s Day 2026: only a listed set of 64 Bee Network routes, plus route 320, ran special timetables. No other buses ran. Normal Bee Network service returned on 2 January.

The archived copy we could reach was taken on 31 December, after the Christmas Eve and Boxing Day sections had been removed, so we cannot give last year’s tram times for those days from TfGM’s own page.

Altrincham Interchange ticket office

Last year’s hours at the Interchange travel shop, from the same TfGM page:

Date (2025) Altrincham office
Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 December 7am to 6.20pm
Wednesday 24 December 7am to 6pm
Thursday 25 and Friday 26 December Closed
Saturday 27 December 7am to 6pm

The Bee Network helpline, 0161 244 1000, was closed only on Christmas Day.

Driving and parking

Trafford has not published any Christmas parking concession. Its car parks charge on bank holidays; the tariffs are on our parking in Altrincham page, and road closures on our roadworks page.

Still to be confirmed

  • Northern’s Christmas Eve last trains and the 26 and 28 December services: National Rail says operators start filling in their pages from early October.
  • Engineering works over Christmas on the Altrincham line: none published yet.
  • TfGM’s 2026 festive tram and bus times: not published yet. We will check from early November.
  • Last trains from London: National Rail publishes that guide in late November or early December.
