The five lower scores

Three premises were rated 1, which the scheme describes as “major improvement necessary”. One was rated 2 and one 3. All five inspections took place between 2 and 4 September.

The FSA register breaks each rating into three parts: how food is handled, the cleanliness and condition of the building, and how food safety is managed. This is what the register records for each:

Business Rating Food handling Building Management
Misu Cafe, Stretford Shopping Mall 1 Good Generally satisfactory Major improvement necessary
Spices of Kashmir, Ayres Road, Old Trafford 1 Very good Generally satisfactory Major improvement necessary
United Local, Warwick Road, Old Trafford 1 Improvement necessary Improvement necessary Major improvement necessary
La Fromagerie, Flixton Road, Urmston 2 Generally satisfactory Improvement necessary Generally satisfactory
Kool Runnings, mobile caterer, Chorlton Road 3 Generally satisfactory Generally satisfactory Generally satisfactory

In two of the three 1 ratings, food handling itself was scored good or very good. The low rating came from the management score, which covers the checks a business keeps and whether the inspector is confident standards will hold.

A rating is a snapshot of the day of the inspection. Under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme a business can appeal its rating, ask for a re-inspection once it has made improvements, and publish a right to reply on its register entry. None of the five had a right to reply listed when we checked.

  • 214 rated 4

  • 7 rated 0

A further 151 are awaiting their first inspection and 79 are exempt.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book. Every business has a register page, linked above. It shows the date of the last inspection as well as the score.
  • Look for the sticker. Businesses in England are encouraged, but not required by law, to display their rating.
  • A 5 is the norm here. Four in five Trafford premises have one, so a lower score is worth a second look at the breakdown.
  • Spotted a problem? You can report a food problem to the council that inspects the business, Trafford in this case.

We publish this roundup at the start of each month. For other Altrincham data, see our house prices page and planning news.
