Partington's new cash hub takes deposits, withdrawals and bill payments Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, in the library on Central Road. It opened on 9 September.
Partington has somewhere to pay cash in again. A cash hub opened inside the library and wellbeing centre on Central Road on Wednesday 9 September, and it runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
The township sits roughly four miles north west of Altrincham. Trafford Council announced the opening on the day, and says the facility was recommended by LINK, the UK’s ATM network, after a community request and campaigning by the council and its partners. It will cut “the need to travel to neighbouring banks across the borough”, the council says.
The hub is owned by Cash Access UK and run by the Post Office. Gareth Oakley, the chief executive of Cash Access UK, said it gives “local residents and businesses access to essential cash and banking services every weekday”. Cllr Rose Thompson, the council’s executive member for housing, partnerships and live well, said it would let residents bank “without having to travel elsewhere”.
What you can actually do there
Cash Access UK’s own description of a cash hub lists six things you can do at the counter:
- deposit cash, notes and coins, and cheques
- withdraw cash, notes and coins
- check your balance
- pay utility bills
- top up gas and electricity
- get change, if you are a registered business
Customers of all the major banks and building societies can use it. Cash Access UK adds the standard caveat that services and limits vary between banks, and that some banks charge for some services, so check with yours.
A cash hub is not a banking hub
The distinction matters, and it is the one thing worth knowing before you make the trip. A cash hub is a counter. A banking hub, the model Cash Access UK runs in Urmston, has the same counter plus community bankers: a member of staff from your own bank, in the building on a set weekday, in a private room, for the more complicated things like payments, transfers and getting to grips with online banking.
Cash Access UK’s Urmston page lists that rota as Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland on Mondays and Thursdays, NatWest on Tuesdays, Barclays on Wednesdays and Santander on Fridays. Partington’s entry is on the cash hub list, and no community banker rota is published for it.
The Urmston banking hub is still in a temporary home at the 1881 Lounge, The Venue, 15 Westbourne Road, M41 0XQ. Cash Access UK says work is under way on its permanent home at 6-8 Flixton Road, M41 5AS.
What Partington lost
The Post Office’s own consultation record shows the branch at 2 Hall Lane, Partington, was the subject of a closure notification issued on 4 August 2023, with the notification period closing on 1 September that year. The Post Office branch finder would not load for us today, so we could not confirm from first-party data whether any counter has operated in the township in between.
Partington’s shops are concentrated on Central Road, which is where the hub has landed, and the area is set to grow. The draft Local Plan describes the New Carrington allocation next door as “one of the largest allocations in Greater Manchester”, at around 5,000 homes and 350,000 sqm of employment floorspace, and its town centres policy specifically supports a new food store in what it calls the “New Carrington/Partington local centre”.
What it means for you
- Address: Partington Library and Wellbeing Centre, 91 Central Road, Partington M31 4FY. Free parking at the front and in the public car park at the side.
- Cash hub hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Cash Access UK says its hubs close on bank holidays.
- The library’s own hours are different. Trafford Council lists the library as staffed 10am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday, and closed Wednesday and Sunday. The council has not published how the cash hub is staffed on a Wednesday, when the library itself is shut. Ring the library on 0161 912 3189 before travelling on a Wednesday.
- If you need to speak to your own bank, the Urmston banking hub is the nearest place with bank staff on site, on the weekday rota above.
- What the hub will not do: open an account, give mortgage or loan advice, or handle anything your bank has not made available at a Post Office counter. Check the limits with your bank first if you are paying in a large amount.
- Getting around the borough on the day: our trains and travel page has the Metrolink and rail times, and our roadworks and travel page has what is closed this week.
